Tamil Student Need More Marks than Sinhalese to go to University?

I was listening to Nihal on BBC today @ youtube and came to this argument that I have heard few times before. Apparently Tamil guy said it is true, they have to have more marks than Sinhalese to enter in to a Sri Lankan universities and Sinhalese guy said it is not true. And they argue about it few times, like they always does on radio, then move on to a deferent entertaining argument. Now I don’t know is it really true or not. If you know, could you please tell me? I’m sure there are lot of people out there really wants to know too...

sri lankan uni admission is done on a district basis. So say you're from Mulathivu, you need less marks to get in than a student from say Kandy. There's no racial quota system here. And Jaffna used to have one of the best unis in the country before the war came and destroyed all of that.

Complex question.

On one hand it is difficult to generalise. The common argument is that selections are made on district basis not on medium - which offers more opportunities for Tamil students too.

On the other hand, some students from Jaffna have to work harder to get selected to some courses than students from Colombo. (Despite the conditions are far worse)

Easy solution is to avoid this stupid district basis system completely and let the selection be done purely on merit. I cannot understand why this cannot be done.

Well the admission for state universities is part merit and part district quota. You can check the actual marks for last year at http://www.ugc.ac.lk/admissions/cutoff/Academic%20year%202007_2008.php.

As for the reason of why not completely merit. The reason is becuase the resources are not divided equally (which is a ridiculous argument, but again the only way to make it work practically). Some districts have a high number of schools which dont have the necessary infrastructure to compete equally against the others, and thus the bar is lowered.

The whole reason why this stupid quota system started was that, quite a long time ago, there was a disproportionate number of Tamils entering the Universities on merit (somewhere around 60% or so) mostly from the Jaffna district, whereas the Tamil population was only 15% of the population. This caused some resentment amongst a lot of Sinhalese people who were not too happy with this. Therefore, the politicians, the power-hungry people that they are, sensed some ammo for getting into power and started canvassing for votes, saying that they'd bring a district quota system to provide more opportunities for the Sinhala majority. Once they did get elected, they changed the system, thereby appeasing their voter base!

what rot! uni admission is based on district quota not ethnicity. So ALL the students in Colombo district regardless of race would have the same cut-off marks just as everyone in Matara or Galle or Kandy or Jaffna would have a different mark. If anything, students in districts like Colombo are at a disadvantage since they have to score sky high.

Aman,

You know very well it is a fabricated lie. What you are talking about is switching from English to Sinhala after British. If you look at his speeches, they are in youtube, He says, we switching from English to Sinhala with reasonable use of Tamil.

Douglas Wikramaratne's comments are full of lies. Tamils had their own Kingdom and what Douglas says is nonsense. Historians know the truth. Tamil nationalism WILL NOT die. The Genocide and War Crimes MUST be investigated. Rajapakse goons must be brought to justice. Orphan Kids (parents killed by GOSL) want justice that niether the Sri lankan government nor foreign nations have provided. Douglas is paid by the Rajapske regime for proganda. Douglas, we don't want to listen to your propaganda - Please allow Intl UN, Media and other organizations for independent information. Shame on the Sri lankan criminal regime to block these independent people.

Is this a SINHALA History? Written by Rajapakse regime? Real Sinhala Modayas that they think they can convince the world with their full of lies. Douglas, the Law of land in the North is different as it was a very different Kingdom.

2009 Discrimination list:

- Education, Employment, Language, Religion,
- There is no Rule of Law
- No Sinhalese is charged from crimes committed against Tamils
- Sinhalese had businesses and educated in Tamil areas but they had to leave as a result of Sinhala attacks.

why don't you prove it with concrete evidence? At least tell us about the oldest Tamil monuments in SL? Or explain why there are absolutely no writings in Tamil in mirror wall of Sigiriya?

The tamils were against the distraict quoata not because of Sinhalese get an unfair advantage (which is not happening, 15-18% of Uni students are Tamil). The Vellars of Jaffna could not stand to see Indian Tamil studnets from Hill country becoming doctors or engineers, and also harijans from Vauniya,Mullativu becoming elite people. They wanted them to be their servants all the time. Still today, there are very few Tamil doctors from Jaffna working in N'Eliya. because these Vellars even hate to touch a low cast Indian Tamil although they are doctors. That's the whole reason for talking against district quota system

I am getting tired of knee jerk stupidity from Sinhalese people. Start screaming 'terrorist propaganda' as soon as the genocide against Tamils is revealed.
The reason for this is because their parents raise them on a fairy tale called the Mahavamsa which is used to demonise tamil people.
Tamil was the oldest culture in Sri Lanka.
Infact when buddhism came to Sri Lanka, alot of Hindu tamils converted to Buddhism. So in effect there were tamil buddhists.
But Sinhalese like to pretend that anything that is affiliated with Buddhism in the past was Sinhalese.
Sinhalese was a language created many years later by the tamil buddhists and the some non-tamil buddhists from India.
Sinhalese was created from Buddhist language Pali, Sanskrit, tamil etc.
It is not the oldest language in Sri Lanka.
Most Sinhalese descend from Tamils.
But because they are so racist they will keep denying this
