Islamic Republic of Sri Lanka

Most of the times I bump in to news I'm wish not. Today I bump in to this news in Sunday observer.

Several Karaoke restaurants in the Colombo city, in suburbs and elsewhere in the country will come under the scrutiny of the police with the amendment to section 360 of the Penal Code being passed in Parliament. A Korean proprietor of the exclusive restaurant was produced in Court and remanded pending further investigations.

Acting on a tip off the Police Women and Child Protection Bureau raided a Karaoke restaurant in Colombo 7, and took in for questioning twenty young girls aged between 20-25. Among the women was a university student, who entertained customers who call over at the Karaoke restaurant.

The university student said that several of her batch mates at the university were on the pay roll of the Karaoke restaurant. "We are made to wear skin-tight clothing and dance along with the customers from dusk to dawn," the student had told the police.

Apart from the salary a hostess earns around Rs. 500-600 per night from tips, for dancing with clients.

What is wrong with this country? When does having good time become a crime? When next time I want to have a good time what should I do? Get a guy to wear a skin-tight cloth and dance for me?

Well, my friend, let me tell you that you cannot have the cake and eat it at the same time.

SL is deemed a Buddhist nation as per her new constitution and so she shall be until we are able to change that to something more secular and truly democratic.

I always wonder how a nation can be democratic and also a religio-related one? Doesn't make any sense neda?

Come to think of it, No religion is democratic...

According to my knowledge only the Sharia law makes it illegal for girls to wear that sort of cloth. Now these girls are arrested because they ware wearing that sort of cloth and worked in a Karaoke. Now I have to assume Police of any country have to act under certain law. It can't be Dutch-Roman (Catholic) law for sure.

Those girls had good honest living with most probably good income. Now close down the Karaoke – send then home hungry - and expect them to be better?

Well, there is certainly a big catch in that caption. It forced me to come and read. But I still didn't understant what bothers the writer and what he wants to project through out his blog? Is it the society who is getting converted to islam and taking advantage of the ''troubled water'' in Srilanka or pointless brainless leaders of Srilankan politics. As a matter of fact ''conversion is a kind of perversion'' and very soon Srilanka is going to face a cultural identity crisis. If they do not understand the spiritual, cultural, traditional maternal links between Buddhism and Hinduism, neither SL gonna have a Buddhist feature nor Tamil society will keep their Hinduist identity. Perhaps, it might end up in a confused culture with split behavioral patters or a fanatic republic with perverted extremities of Catholism or Islam. Before I wind up this blog, let me point out a basic fact, the difference between ''Religion and Dharma''.
Religion is created by a founder and its fandamental nature itself asks the followers to be fanatic in practice. Dharma is nature's law (Sanathana) where you are always open to truth and search for truth. Freedom, Frankness and Fearlessness are its basic characteristic features. Hence it is never founded by one prophet or guided by one set of laws. It appreciates the diversity of societies and all living beings, hence helps co-existance.
Hinduism is not a religion, it is a mode of life or a supplimentary co-existance of many religions. Buddhism(undivided) in its old purity(before Mahayana or Henayana) was a cultural reformative movement led by Holy Saint Sribuddha. But followers made and practiced the vision in the form of a semitic religion (there are historical reasons behind, I agreed). Srilankan problem is not a usual ethnic problem. It is more or less a dreamy political issue with ''lost vision'' on either side. All I want to say is, Its high time for politicians in religious dress and religious leaders in political forms to ''think outside the box'' and find common identities of both the cultures. When the cultures find its similarities and join hands, political dust will go off and a new Dharmic dawn will rise. Certainly, its not that easy way to walk on.They need a Heart with loads of love, passion & courage. I wish those ''Politicians have a Poetic Heart''.
