While it is very interesting to note the tendency of many of these celebrities to look into Buddhism, as a way of life, in order to seek their personal salvations, it becomes difficult to understand how they could agree to give up materialism which is the basis of all Buddhist teachings?

A true Buddhist, in my view, has no place in society as an individual since he must abandon all materialistic needs, wants and desires and seek the path of meditation in order to reach his/her Nirvana.

Hey Aruna,
Uma Thurman is there in the list - but i didnt add Dalai Lama because he is a monk :-)

Hey FreeThinker..
Good comment! I always like deferent point of views :-)

//give up materialism which is the basis of all Buddhist teachings//

Giving up materials is defiantly NOT the basic of Buddhism.
If not having materials make you a good Buddhist, then all the homeless people should be best Buddhist out there, isn’t it?

// A true Buddhist, in my view, has no place in society as an individual.//
Even Buddha himself has a great position in society, even now.

// he must abandon all materialistic needs//
Even a enlighten monk have materialistic needs! It is not the materials and nothing wrong with materials. It is the attachments to materials.

// desires and seek the path of meditation in order to reach his/her Nirvana//
This I agree without a question.
Even a lay person can desire happiness and use meditation to increase happiness.

Been rich and famous is relative. Even Buddha is famous and he was given expensive materials – but he was not attached to them.

Most of the rich and famous people are not much deferent from all of us. There are just hard working people with good Karma behind them. Check this Steve Job’s speech – “Stay Hungry, Stay Stupid”. Very inspiring.

Thanks for the responses. Very interesting, indeed...

No, not necessarily. The homeless people are homeless not by choice. A good Buddhist is one who gives up his attachment (as you rightly put it) for materialistic things by his own choice, as I initially meant in my statement.

//Even Buddha himself has a great position in society, even now.//

Yes, sure he does, but NOT for himself BUT for others. A good Budhist should strive for this and NOT for selfish needs.

//Even a enlighten monk have materialistic needs! It is not the materials and nothing wrong with materials. It is the attachments to materials.//

All living beings do have materlaistic needs and no doubt its the craving for this that makes them evil. Hewnce the good Buddhist should desist frm the craving which we dont see anwhere these days. Do we?

//Most of the rich and famous people are not much deferent from all of us. There are just hard working people with good Karma behind them//

I still cannot comprehend the reality of "Karma" since it is not scientifically proven and hence has no basis for me to believe in it no different from the monotheistic beliefs of Heaven and Hell. My contention is that we reap what we sow without any "Karma" or pre-defined variables hanging on our heads. Why shpould we have to suffer or be blessed for something we didnt say, do or work for?

Karma does exist! I learn that very young age!
When ever I jump over the fence and play with kids without telling my mother, bad karma was waiting at home when I come back. Even now, ignore the traffic light, bad karma is waiting other side with a ticket book.

But if you are taking about Karma after life, then it is your own call. Things like afterlife, nirvana, have to understand by one self. It is not something one can understand reading a book or a scientific journal. Believe in them, and understanding them is two deferent things.

Believe is something like believe in Kandy looking at a map created by some one else, but you have to go to Kandy yourself to understand it. A map can help to go to the destination, but that is not the destination.

Once a person understood those things by them self (through meditation), then they can truly get rid of attachments to the world. Not other way around. I mean, cloth should come out when you in the bathroom, not whiling walking to the bathroom.

This understanding can be a quite long journey.

Well, at least that is how look at it.
Hey, good discussion. Made me thinks.
